How can we better prepare for risks related to tailings management facilities? We explored the answers together in Košice and at the Bodnarec Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Slovinky.
As part of the SAFETY4TMF project, we welcomed our international partners to Košice for a two-day peer-review visit. The aim was to present the Bodnarec TMF, showcase the pilot activities implemented within the project, and promote the exchange of knowledge and experience in tailings monitoring and risk management.
The programme began with expert presentations at Via Carpatia EGTC. Participants then visited the Bodnarec TMF site in Slovinky, where they learned about the site’s history, its current condition, environmental challenges, and the pilot activities carried out within the project. Experts from VODOHOSPODÁRSKA VÝSTAVBA, State Enterprise, and Rudné bane, State Enterprise, presented technical information about the site, the project’s pilot actions, and their practical experience. Representatives of the Fire and Rescue Service also contributed to the discussions by demonstrating the equipment they use in their work and sharing their experience of operating in challenging terrain.
On the second day, the programme continued at the Faculty of Mining, Ecology, Process Control and Geotechnologies (FBERG), Technical University of Košice, where partners visited research laboratories and learned about ongoing research supporting the monitoring and safe management of tailings management facilities. The Košice Self-Governing Region also presented its Geoportal, demonstrating how spatial data, visualisation, and analysis can support more effective decision-making and territorial monitoring.
The peer-review visit provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, share good practices, and discuss common challenges. Meetings like these strengthen international cooperation and contribute to the development of more effective solutions for the safe management of tailings management facilities.
