Active Ageing Centre Opens Its Doors in Trebišov!

The European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) Via Carpatia officially opened a new Active Ageing Centre in Trebišov, providing seniors from the town and surrounding areas with a new space for education, physical activity, creativity and social interaction.

Julianna Máté, Director of EGTC Via Carpatia, officially inaugurated the centre in the presence of Rastislav Trnka, President of the Košice Self-Governing Region, and Marek Čižmár, Mayor of Trebišov. Following the opening speeches, they jointly cut the ribbon, symbolically marking the beginning of the centre’s activities. The guests then toured the premises, while the seniors in attendance had the opportunity to participate in demonstrations of physical activities, English conversation sessions and art therapy.

The opening of the Active Ageing Centre in Trebišov marked the first concrete step towards gradually establishing a network of active ageing centres in other regions of Slovakia.

The new centre builds on the experience of the Active Ageing Centre in Košice, which has been operating since June 2022 and has become a place for regular social gatherings, learning opportunities and active engagement for people aged 60 and over. In 2025 alone, the Košice centre organised 786 activities, with dozens of instructors from among the seniors themselves contributing to its programmes.

By expanding this model to Trebišov, new opportunities have been created to promote health, independence, lifelong learning and the prevention of social isolation among seniors in the Zemplín region. The positive feedback and strong interest shown by visitors during the opening ceremony confirmed the need for similar community spaces beyond the regional capital.

The first regular activities at the Active Ageing Centre in Trebišov are scheduled to begin in November 2026, initially taking place twice a week.

The programme will include physical activities, language and IT courses, creative workshops and community gatherings, sessions focusing on health and lifestyle, expert lectures, workshops, excursions and other events. The range of activities will gradually expand according to the interests and needs of local seniors.

Cooperation with local organisations, schools, experts and other partners will also play an important role in the centre’s operation.

EGTC Via Carpatia aims to create an environment in which seniors are not merely participants in organised activities, but actively contribute to shaping them, sharing their knowledge, experience and skills with others.
